Balancing Act (2 x 3 x 3.5") (Artist: Peter Calvesbert) (Edition Size: 500 pcs.) “Balancing Act” was inspired by a recent trip that Peter took to Florida’s Sea World. The highlight of his visit was seeing the great “Shamu” perform his many tricks. All right, so he didn’t actually juggle, but we bet Sea World is working on it! Peter reports that he is always torn on occasions such as these. He loves observing creatures that he will probably never see in the wild. But he felt uncomfortable watching these magnificent whales perform tricks for an audience. Within this box figurine are the carvings “I’m Mashu” and “50+”. Peter always thought that there was just one very famous orca named Shamu, but he learned that this is a stage name and that Sea World has had over 50 of them over the years. Inscriptions on the lid include its Latin name “Orcinus Orca” and “Mr. Big Fin”, since it is the male Orca with the longer dorsal fins.

Bed and Breakfast (2.75 x 2.75 x 2.5") (Artist: Peter Calvesbert) (Edition Size: 600 pcs.) The dormouse is a very secretive creature. It sleeps all winter, only waking to nibble at something in its food store. During the summer, it still sleeps during the day and comes out to feed at night. It’s understandable why Master Carver Peter Calvesbert has never seen a dormouse! Peter started this model during his 2007 American signing tour. Perhaps his travels were so exhausting that he longed for sleep. The interior shows a dormouse doing what it does best. . .sleeping. A message on the lid says “See you in April”, referencing the 2008 HOP Convention taking place in Orlando in April. Also on the lid are the words “Hazel”, “Bramble” and “Honeysuckle”. These are shrubs that are very important to the dormouse’s survival. It eats the hazel, hides and feeds in the brambles, and builds its nest from the honeysuckle. Notice the smooth edged hole in the hazelnut on the base. This is one way of identifying the presence of a dormouse, as other mice leave a serrated edge.

Master Carver Peter Calvesbert wonders why some people think that large cat skins look better on humans than on large cats. To show how misguided a fashion statement this is, Peter turns the tables and portrays large cats feeling glamorous in human skins! One hundred pieces from this limited edition of 1500 are adorned with some very private parts. On these box figurines, the interior reads “Members Only” (pun intended). The privates have been excised in the slightly less grotesque version and replaced with noses and thumbs. On this second model, the words “AMUR” and number 40 are found. This refers to the plight of the Amur leopard. It is estimated that only 40 specimens of this beautiful creature remain in the wild. The interior reads "hands off my coat".

Coup d'etat (2.75 x 2 x 2.75") (Artist: Peter Calvesbert) (Edition Size: 1000 pcs.) The 2008 Black Box, “Coup d'etat”, examines the production of foie gras, a well-known French delicacy. Foie Gras means “Fat Liver”, an apt name as ducks and geese are force fed corn mash until their livers are up to ten times their normal size. In typical Black Box fashion, the tables are turned. Five ducks take revenge by force feeding Master Carver Peter Calvesbert. One of the sacks of corn is labelled “Liverburst” (a play on the name of the German sausage). This can be the unfortunate consequence of force feeding. France consumes 80% of the world’s foie gras, thus the inscription “France” and “80” on the lid. Upon the base are names of countries that have prohibited its production, and “Arny 2012” refers to Mr. Schwarzenegger and his intention to ban foie gras in California by that year. The interior shows a goose working out. Evidently, he is worried about the weight he’s putting on.
