Ma Shawu - Taiwan Description
Belonging to the Gaoshan people from her country of Taiwan, Ma Shawu wears a black wool outfit adorned with specialized patterns of intricate needlework created by her ancestors. Believed to ward off bad luck, copper bells sway along the edge of her capelet.
Eighteen colorful pom-poms encircle her headdress representing the 18 different tribes of the Gaoshan. THe white feathers are symbolic to attracting a prospective sweetheart. Three bright metal discs and tiny metal studs are worked into the decorative flap that hangs at her waist.
